Twenty different tax preparation companies work with the IRS to provide free tax preparation for US citizens who qualify for the service. Some provide federal preparation for all 50 states, others just select states. Many of the companies offer free preparation to filers who make up to $58,000 in adjusted gross income, some only offer free preparation for those under $32,000 in adjusted gross income. Regardless, each of these prepares offers a free file version of their software that allows users to prepare & file their federal return for free (state returns are often an additional fee).
